The Beginning of the Journey

For his first job, Tunde Lemo was given a bank teller position in the branch of Union Bank in Abuja. This is because he was not made to feel like he belonged at Union Bank with his Caucasian colleagues.

Tunde Lemo’s story starts off as an average Nigerian kid who wanted a better life for himself and so he did what everyone does–joined a bank. He had worked in banking for over 10 years before he joined Union Bank where he finally felt like he belonged. A lot of struggle, disappointment, opposition, success, failure, and adversity came during the course of his career with Union Bank that led him to where he is today as one of their most successful African-American bankers in Nigeria.

Challenges

-His colleagues would not accept him because of his race

-He was not given the opportunity to participate in any project or organization in which he could advance his career

-There were no incentives for him to be successful

Tunde Lemo is a banker who had a difficult time during his first few years at Union Bank. Although he loved banking, there was always something that made him feel like he did not belong with his Caucasian colleagues. When Tunde Lemo was hired into Union Bank of Nigeria, he was placed into a branch where the management was predominantly Caucasian. This is not uncommon in Nigeria. Conclusion On Tunde Lemo

My journey at Union Bank started in 2007 with an interview for the position of an associate bank manager. I was given the opportunity to interview with the CEO and chairman of the bank which was the first time I met Mr. Tunde Lemo.

It was during this time that he asked me what I wanted to do in life and I told him that I was a banker by heart. The interview went well and I was given an offer, I accepted it and now I could start my journey within the institution. The first six years were a challenging time but it was still enjoyable but as time went on, things started to change and people started to become more difficult. Now, it is no longer about enjoying my work but about hoping to survive.
